    System for simultaneously loading program to master computer memory devices and corresponding slave computer memory devices

    A bus programmable slave module card for use in a computer control system is disclosed which comprises a master computer and one or more slave computer modules interfacing by means of a bus. Each slave module includes its own microprocessor, memory, and control program for acting as a single loop controller. The slave card includes a plurality of memory means (S1, S2...) corresponding to a like plurality of memory devices (C1, C2...) in the master computer, for each slave memory means its own communication lines connectable through the bus with memory communication lines of an associated memory device in the master computer, and a one-way electronic door which is switchable to either a closed condition or a one-way open condition. With the door closed, communication lines between master computer memory (C1, C2...) and slave memory (S1, S2...) are blocked. In the one-way open condition invention, the memory communication lines or each slave memory means (S1, S2...) connect with the memory communication lines of its associated memory device (C1, C2...) in the master computer, and the memory devices (C1, C2...) of the master computer and slave card are electrically parallel such that information seen by the master's memory is also seen by the slave's memory. The slave card is also connectable to a switch for electronically removing the slave microprocessor from the system. With the master computer and the slave card in programming mode relationship, and the slave microprocessor electronically removed from the system, loading a program in the memory devices (C1, C2...) of the master accomplishes a parallel loading into the memory devices (S1, S2...) of the slave

    The initial steps taken in developing a completely menu driven and totally automated computer control system for a bioreactor are discussed. This bioreactor is an electro-mechanical cell growth system cell requiring vigorous control of slowly changing parameters, many of which are so dynamically interactive that computer control is a necessity. The process computer will have two main functions. First, it will provide continuous environmental control utilizing low signal level transducers as inputs and high powered control devices such as solenoids and motors as outputs. Secondly, it will provide continuous environmental monitoring, including mass data storage and periodic data dumps to a supervisory computer

    A study of the relations of average two-year soybean yields produced to use of recommended production practices and selected characterisitcs of Marion County producers

    The purposes of the study were to: (1) determine certain characteristics of Marion County soybean producers and their farms; (2) more accurately determine which recommended production practices soybean producers were using in 1968 and 1969; (3) study the relation between use of recommended production practices and yield levels; and (4) identify some of the more important factors influencing adoption of recommended soybean production practices. Thirty-eight soybean producers, which constituted both population and sample, were interviewed for the purpose of gathering data for study purposes. The data included the crop years of 1968 and 1969. Growers were categorized in above and below average yield levels, and main comparisons were made between these two groups. Findings disclosed that soybean producers and their farms had the following characteristics: (1) had an average farm size of 430 acres; (2) had an average of 155 acres of cropland; (3) planted an average of 102 acres of soybeans; (4) had an average educational level of 9.5 grades; (5) had an average age of 47.1 years; and (6) had a median gross family income of 14,375(forthoseansweringthisoptionalquestion).WhentheHighandLowyieldgroupswerecompareditwasfoundthattheformerhad:(Dalargeraveragefarmsize(498vs365acres);(2)moreaverageacresofcropland(178vs150acres);(3)plantedfeweracresofsoybeans(92vs114acres);(4)aslightlyhigheraverageeducationallevel(9.9vs9.2grades);(5)aslightlyloweraverageage(46.8vs47.9years);and(6)ahighermediangrossfamilyincomeforthoseansweringthisoptionalquestion(14,375 (for those answering this optional question). When the High and Low yield groups were compared it was found that the former had: (Da larger average farm size (498 vs 365 acres); (2) more average acres of cropland (178 vs 150 acres); (3) planted fewer acres of soybeans (92 vs 114 acres); (4) a slightly higher average educational level (9.9 vs 9.2 grades); (5) a slightly lower average age (46.8 vs 47.9 years); and (6) a higher median gross family income for those answering this optional question (17,499 vs $13,333). With regard to adoption of eleven recommended soybean production practices studied, farmers in the High yield group had slightly higher total average practice diffusion ratings than did the Low yield group. Essentially no difference was shown between the High and Low yield groups with regard to use of soybean production practices and the producers position in the diffusion process, although more of the former were liming and fertilizing according to soil test recommendations and were seeking advice from professionals. Some reasons given to explain why soybean producers were not adopting recommended soybean production practices included: (1) lack of adequate machinery and equipment; (2) lack of technical knowledge needed; (3) relative cost of the practice and net returns per acre; (4) more rewarding activities demanded grower\u27s time and money; and (5) belief that practices were not sound. With regard to sources of advice about soybean production practices the growers listed (in order of frequency mentioned); neighbors and friends; seed, fertilizer, or pesticide dealers; soybean buyers; equip-ment dealers; Extension agents; Soil Conservation Service representative; soybean specialist; Farmers Home Administration representative; and banker or Production Credit Association representative. Additional sources of information mentioned were farm magazines. Extension distri-buted bulletins and publications, Extension newsletters, radio, weekly newspapers, farm meetings, commercial bulletins, daily newspapers, field days and tours, and television in that order. It was recommended that study findings be used in the development of an Extension teaching plan for soybean producers in Marion County

    This report summarizes (I) annual purse seine landings of Atlantic menhaden, Brevoortia tyrannus, for 1972-84, (2) estimated numbers of fish caught by fishing area. (3) estimates of nominal fishing effort and catch-per-unit-effort, (4) mean fish length and weight, and (5) major changes in the fishery. During the 1970s stock size and recruitment increased and the age composition broadened. reversing trends witnessed during the fishery's decline in the 1960s. Landings steadily improved and by 1980 the total coast wide landings exceeded 400,000 metric tons. Nevertheless, the character of the fishery changed considerably. Eleven reduction plants processed fish at seven ports in 1972, but in 1984 only eight plants operated at live ports. Beginning in the mid-1960s the center of fishing aclivity shifted from the Middle Atlantic area to the Chesapeake Bay area, which has continued to dominate the fishery in landings and effort through the 1970s and 1980s. During this period the average size and age of fish in the catches declined. (PDF file contains 30 pages.

    Cystic Fibrosis is the most common inherited genetic respiratory disorder in the Western World. Hypovitaminosis D is almost universal in CF patients, likely due to a combination of inadequate absorption, impaired metabolism, and lack of sun exposure. Inadequate levels are associated with the high prevalence of bone disease or osteoporosis in CF patients, which is associated with increased morbidity including fractures, kyphosis, and worsening pulmonary status. Treatment goals include regular monitoring 25 hydroxyvitamin D (25OHD) levels with aggressive treatment for those with levels <75 nmol/L (<30 ng/mL). More research is needed to determine optimal supplementation goals and strategies

    Testing asteroseismology with Gaia DR2: Hierarchical models of the Red Clump

    Asteroseismology provides fundamental stellar parameters independent of distance, but subject to systematics under calibration. Gaia DR2 has provided parallaxes for a billion stars, which are offset by a parallax zero-point. Red Clump (RC) stars have a narrow spread in luminosity, thus functioning as standard candles to calibrate these systematics. This work measures how the magnitude and spread of the RC in the Kepler field are affected by changes to temperature and scaling relations for seismology, and changes to the parallax zero-point for Gaia. We use a sample of 5576 RC stars classified through asteroseismology. We apply hierarchical Bayesian latent variable models, finding the population level properties of the RC with seismology, and use those as priors on Gaia parallaxes to find the parallax zero-point offset. We then find the position of the RC using published values for the zero-point. We find a seismic temperature insensitive spread of the RC of ~0.03 mag in the 2MASS K band and a larger and slightly temperature-dependent spread of ~0.13 mag in the Gaia G band. This intrinsic dispersion in the K band provides a distance precision of ~1% for RC stars. Using Gaia data alone, we find a mean zero-point of -41 ±\pm 10 μ\muas. This offset yields RC absolute magnitudes of -1.634 ±\pm 0.018 in K and 0.546 ±\pm 0.016 in G. Obtaining these same values through seismology would require a global temperature shift of ~-70 K, which is compatible with known systematics in spectroscopy.Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRA

    Evaluation of complication rates after coronary artery bypass surgery using administrative data

    Our objectives were (1) to determine if studying hospital complication rates after coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery provides information not available when only mortality is studied, and (2) to reexplore the utility of ICD-9-CM administrative data for CABG outcomes assessment. Using data from Massachusetts, we identified CABG cohorts from 1990 and 1992 to respectively develop and validate multivariate risk adjustment models predicting in-hospital mortality and complications. The resulting models had good discrimination and calibration. In 1992, adjusted hospital complication rates ranged widely from 13.0% to 57.6%, while mortality rates ranged from 1.4% to 6.1%. Hospitals with high complication rates tended to have high mortality (r = 0.74, p = 0.006), but 2 of the 12 hospitals studied ranked quite differently when judged by complications rather than mortality. We conclude that (1) complications after CABG occur frequently and may provide information about hospital quality beyond that obtained from hospital mortality rates, and that (2) administrative data continue to be a promising resource for outcomes research

    Acoustic Bubble Removal to Enhance SWL Efficacy at High Shock Rate: An In Vitro Study

    Rate-dependent efficacy has been extensively documented in shock wave lithotripsy (SWL) stone comminution, with shock waves (SWs) delivered at a low rate producing more efficient fragmentation in comparison to those delivered at high rates. Cavitation is postulated to be the primary source underlying this rate phenomenon. Residual bubble nuclei that persist along the axis of SW propagation can drastically attenuate the waveform's negative phase, decreasing the energy which is ultimately delivered to the stone and compromising comminution. The effect is more pronounced at high rates, as residual nuclei have less time to passively dissolve between successive shocks. In this study, we investigate a means of actively removing such nuclei from the field using a low-amplitude acoustic pulse designed to stimulate their aggregation and subsequent coalescence. To test the efficacy of this bubble removal scheme, model kidney stones were treated in vitro using a research electrohydraulic lithotripter. SWL was applied at rates of 120, 60, or 30?SW/min with or without the incorporation of bubble removal pulses. Optical images displaying the extent of cavitation in the vicinity of the stone were also collected for each treatment. Results show that bubble removal pulses drastically enhance the efficacy of stone comminution at the higher rates tested (120 and 60?SW/min), while optical images show a corresponding reduction in bubble excitation along the SW axis when bubble removal pulses are incorporated. At the lower rate of 30?SW/min, no difference in stone comminution or bubble excitation was detected with the addition of bubble removal pulses, suggesting that remnant nuclei had sufficient time for more complete dissolution. These results corroborate previous work regarding the role of cavitation in rate-dependent SWL efficacy, and suggest that the effect can be mitigated via appropriate control of the cavitation environment surrounding the stone.Peer Reviewedhttps://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/140375/1/end.2013.0313.pd
